The Studio

A specialised millwork
design practice.

Planar exists in a specific place in the residential supply chain: between the architect's intent and the cabinet maker's saw. We design and document every cabinet, built-in, and millwork element on a project — then hand qualified Calgary shops the drawings they need to build it.

— What we do

Drawings,
specifications,
coordination.

Every project — whether a single kitchen or a 200-unit development — passes through the same disciplined sequence of drawings and documentation.

01

Concept design & space planning

Hand sketches, plan layouts, and elevation studies that translate a homeowner's brief — or an architect's drawings — into a millwork program. We size openings, set sight-lines, and plan storage before any cabinet is drawn in detail.

02

3D modelling & photoreal rendering

Models built in Mozaik for cabinet construction, exported to SketchUp for material and finish visualisation, then rendered in Enscape for client-ready presentations. Clients see exactly how a kitchen will look before a single sheet of plywood is cut.

03

Production-ready shop drawings

Detailed plan views, elevations, sections, and construction details prepared in AutoCAD and Revit. Title blocks, dimension strings, hardware schedules, finish callouts — everything a Calgary cabinet shop needs to fabricate without phone calls.

04

Materials & finish specifications

Door styles, edge profiles, finish samples, hardware selections, and material schedules — packaged as a finish book that travels with the drawings to the shop and the site.

05

Site coordination

For new builds, we take two site measurements: an initial measure for the project to be built, and a final measure after drywall and rough-ins are complete. Final dimensions go into the CAD drawings before they release to production — eliminating field adjustments.

— The toolkit

Production software, used in production.

Our drawings come out of the same tools real Calgary shops use on the floor. No translation layer between design and manufacturing — what we draw is what gets built.

CABINET ENGINEERING

Mozaik

Production-grade cabinet design software used directly by Calgary cabinet shops. We model every cabinet box, drawer, and door in Mozaik — meaning the drawings we hand to a shop can be opened, modified, and machined without re-drawing.

3D VISUALISATION

SketchUp + Enscape

Mozaik models export to SketchUp where we apply materials, finishes, hardware, and lighting context. Enscape renders walkable, photorealistic 3D scenes — clients see how morning light falls across the cabinetry, not just plans on a page.

SHOP DRAWINGS

AutoCAD

Standard 2D drawing package: floor plans, elevations, sections, and detail callouts at production scale. Every cabinet shop in Calgary opens AutoCAD files without translation — these drawings move directly to the floor.

BIM COORDINATION

Revit

For new builds and multi-family work, we coordinate millwork inside the architect's Revit model. Cabinets integrate with structural, mechanical, and electrical systems — no surprises when the cabinet shop arrives on site.
